Teacher leaders will participate in professional development to
acquire the skills needed to establish and sustain building based learning
communities
Through a combination of content-focused summer
academies, mentor training, workshops, site visits, and electronic networking, NCOSP
is building strong science teacher leaders, establish effective building-based science
learning communities, and provide mentors to support preservice teachers and retain
new teachers.
NCOSP Teacher leaders are learning to:
Link specific content, developmental appropriateness, curriculum coherence, research on student conceptions, and instructional strategies to state and national standards
Apply their knowledge of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment, to make sound curriculum selection and implementation decisions
Use classroom assessments to improve instruction
Use classroom observation instruments to evaluate instructional practices
Use protocols for examining and scoring student work and apply them in school-based learning communities
Use a research-based framework to design and deliver professional development
Support preservice and induction teachers using content-specific mentoring.
These themes are addressed during a three-year experience that includes three
80-hour summer academies and professional development
throughout the academic year, provided by both WWU science faculty
and the TOSAs.
