George D. Nelson, PhD, Principal Investigator:
Director of Science,
Mathematics, and Technology Education and Associate Professor of
Physics and Astronomy at Western Washington University. Dr. Nelson
specializes in stellar astrophysics/science education. He is the
former director of AAAS Project 2061, the education officer-elect
of the American Astronomical Society, served as Associate Vice
Provost for research and Associate Professor of Astronomy at the
University of Washington, and as a NASA astronaut. He teaches
elementary science methods and practicum, graduate courses on science
curriculum, astronomy, and physics. Dr. Nelson is responsible for the
overall conduct of the project as well as participating directly in
many of the projects activities.

Carolyn Landel, PhD, Project Director:
Research Associate
SMATE, Affiliated Teaching Faculty member in the Biology
Department at Western Washington University. Dr. Landel
specializes in cell biology/science education. She was
formerly the Education Programs Manager for the Washington
Association for Biomedical Research, a Fellow of National
Academy for Science and Mathematics Educators, and was
awarded external funding to develop a Science Education
Leadership experience at WWU for K-12 teachers. She is also
a consultant for Horizon Research, Inc, developing novel
professional development embedded assessment to measure
teacher learning. Dr. Landel is responsible for the
day-to-day coordination of all of the partners and partnership
activities. She supervises both the Communications and
On-Line Support Specialist and Administrative Assistant,
and works closely with the evaluators on the associated research.
