Partnership Leadership

The Partnership Leadership Team includes broad representation from school districts, Education Service Districts, LASER, and higher education and will meet for three hours every month to review emerging research relevant to the project, to report on implementation efforts, and assess needed mid-course corrections.

George D. Nelson, PhD, Principal Investigator: Director of Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education and Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Western Washington University. Dr. Nelson specializes in stellar astrophysics/science education. He is the former director of AAAS Project 2061, the education officer-elect of the American Astronomical Society, served as Associate Vice Provost for research and Associate Professor of Astronomy at the University of Washington, and as a NASA astronaut. He teaches elementary science methods and practicum, graduate courses on science curriculum, astronomy, and physics. Dr. Nelson is responsible for the overall conduct of the project as well as participating directly in many of the projects activities.

Carolyn Landel, PhD, Project Director: Research Associate SMATE, Affiliated Teaching Faculty member in the Biology Department at Western Washington University. Dr. Landel specializes in cell biology/science education. She was formerly the Education Programs Manager for the Washington Association for Biomedical Research, a Fellow of National Academy for Science and Mathematics Educators, and was awarded external funding to develop a Science Education Leadership experience at WWU for K-12 teachers. She is also a consultant for Horizon Research, Inc, developing novel professional development embedded assessment to measure teacher learning. Dr. Landel is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of all of the partners and partnership activities. She supervises both the Communications and On-Line Support Specialist and Administrative Assistant, and works closely with the evaluators on the associated research.

Dan Hanley, Internal Evaluator: Dan has evaluated several NSF funded projects in the topics of science, engineering, and technology education. He is completing his Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation from the University of Colorado-Boulder in Spring 2008.

Martin Chorba: Woodring Recruitment/Outreach; WWU Alumni Board. Marty is a retired high school principal, whose special interests are public school issues as they relate to teaching and learning. He has served actively in this and other communities on various boards and is currently a member of the Loving Brothers of Whatcom County. Mr. Chorba coordinates recruitment activities at WWU, within the school districts, and community colleges. He also had the lead role in establishing future teacher clubs in schools.

Brad Smith, PhD: Dean of Academics (interim) at Skagit Valley College. Before becoming Dean, Dr. Smith was a faculty member in the Physical Sciences department at SVC, teaching introductory courses in earth sciences and physics. He also participated as a member of the Science Advisory Group to the Washington State Commission on Student Learning, and various science advisory activities in Skagit, Island, and San Juan counties. Along with Dr. Linneman, Smith will coordinate the participation of community college faculty in the general undergraduate science course revision and design, and will assist in the integration of community college faculities into professional development and other NCOSP activities.

Sherrie Brown: Director of Curriculum, Bellingham School District. Ms. Brown is working with a Secondary Science committee to develop new science curriculum for grades six through ten. Before becoming the Curriculum District Director, Sherrie was a secondary school administrator for seventeen years in Ferndale, Pt. Townsend and Bellingham. Sherrie taught middle and high school science for thirteen years with her special interest being in Biology and Life Sciences. Ms. Brown will coordinate implementation of professional development and mentoring for Whatcom county schools.

Dennis Schatz: Vice President for Education and Exhibits, Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Schatz provides leadership to Pacific Science Center's science education programs, which includes a broad range of programs serving teachers, students, community-based organizations and families across Washington State. He co-directs Washington State LASER (Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform), a program to implement a quality K-8 science program in all 296 school districts in Washington State. Mr. Schatz will organize and run Strategic Planning Institutes, Curriculum Showcases, and Specialized Symposia for district administrators and community members.

Jim Minstrell, PhD , External Evaluator: Research scientist at FACET Innovations in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Minstrell has taught at the elementary, high school, and university levels. He consults with several large projects developing assessment tools, conducting professional development for teachers, and conducting evaluation. He acts as external evaluator for The Information Technology in Science (ITS) Center for Learning and Teaching at Texas A & M and assists with external evaluation of The Center for Informal Learning and Schools (CILS).
